Arts Contribute to the Development of a Community or a Country

To mark the third edition of the “Ambassador’s Art in the Atrium” program, the United States Embassy in Abidjan launched a month-long exhibition on 17 May 2006 dubbed “Art for Unity”.  The Cooperative of Weavers from Tiébissou, which specializes in traditional Baoulé woven cloths that depicts prestige and dignity, sculptors from Zuénoula, and the Cooperative of Women Potters led by renowned potter Mama Coulibaly, took part.  More than fifty cloths coming from several villages, dozens of items ranging from salad bowls to papaya vases, and flowers, and masks were displayed... Seminar on HIV/AIDS Covering for Local Radio Reporters

About 30 local radio journalists and producers recently attended a three-day seminar on HIV/AIDS coverage. The first part of the training, organized by the US Embassy in Abidjan, runs from April 19 through April 20, 2006. It was attended by 12 reporters from Radio Al-Bayane, a Muslim national radio station in Abidjan. Major topics include: Techniques of news reporting; HIV/AIDS and behavior change; developing stories ideas on HIV/AIDS; and compiling Stories on HIV/AIDS... (more)

Bringing Women’s History Alive for the Broadcast Media

They may have been separated by distance, culture, and experiences, but they found ways to connect through a video conference. Thirty female Ivoirian broadcast journalists connected with two of their American counterparts because they both knew the challenges of working as woman in journalism. They connected because the TV anchor and radio host from Middle America, also happened to speak French, something that greatly impressed their Ivoirian colleagues... (more)

National Museum exhibits Ivorian musical instruments in the Artrium

The centerpiece of PAS Abidjan’s Black History Month programming was the second vernissage of our special "Ambassador’s Art in the Atrium" Program. The embassy’s ongoing partnership with the National Museum of Civilization and Culture encouraged close cooperation: embassy staff worked hand-in-hand with museum experts to display traditional Ivorian musical instruments, some of them two hundred years old. The elegant opening soirée brought together Ministers of State, government officials, the diplomatic corps, and Ivorian cultural icons to admire over 40 national treasures from the museum's vaults ... Ambassador Aubrey Hooks and Ivoirian First Lady Simone Gbagbo, opened a counseling and testing center that promotes sustainability through involvement and contributions by local stakeholders. Martha Matilda Harper: Mother of Modern Franchising

A group of 35 Ivoirian entrepreneurs, exporters and government officials gathered on May 4, 2006 at the Embassy of the United States in Abidjan to discuss Martha Matilda Harper’s model of franchising.
