Peace is Possible, Says American Ambassador on Visit to the West and Zone of Confidence
Ambassador Aubrey Hooks led a large American delegation through the west of Cote d’Ivoire and the Zone of Confidence, as part of a week-long trip through New Forces-held territory to strengthen the peace process. The Ambassador stressed the importance of beginning the disarmament and identification processes during meetings with the New Forces leaders in Man. He called the meetings thus far “very productive” and said that he remains optimistic about the peace process and prospects for holding elections soon.
“I have heard consistently, throughout this trip, that the people and leaders of the west want peace,” said Ambassador Hooks. “I told them that the United States will continue to stand with them throughout this important time. I’ve also seen the tremendous needs of this region and when peace is formally in hand, we will be able to rapidly expand our aid.”
The United States has already put in place several humanitarian aid projects in the north and west. Through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, it has dedicated 2.5 billion CFA to rebuild the health sector and fight HIV/AIDS. The American government has also given a large grant for a reconciliation project in the Man region, which the Ambassador visited on his tour. The delegation spent time with one local organization in Man that is able to work with hundreds of orphans and vulnerable children thanks to American support. The Ambassador also toured a child soldier rehabilitation site and participated in cultural ceremonies in Man, the Zone of Confidence, and Zouan. The American delegation is on the road again today, and will continue their exchanges with local authorities.
