Grand Bassam Hosts the First Edition of America Day
The first edition of America Day was held on December 5 in the city of Grand-Bassam. The day-long program was marked by various cultural activities, including the embassy’s web site presentation (for about 50 students at the International University of Grand Bassam), a book discussion with 25 community activists on the Nouveaux Horizons translation of Joseph Shapiro's entitled: “No Pity”, an American Encounter, and a presentation for NGO leaders on American-style fundraising.
The book discussion, led by Public Affairs Officer David Andresen, was organized in connection with World Disability Day for all citizens but particularly those living with a disability. It focused on citizens’ rights in a civil and democratic society.
Members of the English Club at the Leon Robert high school attended an American Encounter session led by visiting Information Resource Officer, Anne Johnson (who is based in Accra). The encounter gave Ivorian students an opportunity to interact with an American in English and pose questions. She spoke about her home state and answered questions from the students about life in the United States.
In a PowerPoint presentation, the Cultural Affairs Officer, Linda McMullen, showed 30 NGO leaders and directors the best way to go about finding funds – by soliciting individuals, working with groups, writing grants, and attracting volunteers.
America Day is the American Embassy’s new initiative that allows the embassy to reach out to Ivorians living outside of Abidjan.
