Major General Zabecki greeting Specialist Emolo at the Military Airport in Abidjan |
An Ivoirian-American Soldier Returns Home For Final Funeral Rites Emotions were strong at the Military Airport in Abidjan today, when the casket containing the body of Army Specialist Ebe Firmin Emolo arrived on board a United States’ military aircraft. The body of Specialist Emolo was accompanied by Major General David T. Zabecki, Representative of the U.S. Army's Chief of Staff, and an American military honor guard.
Detachments from the Ivoirian National Armed Forces and United Nations Mission in Côte d’Ivoire were also present at the airport to pay their last respects. Specialist Emolo was killed on April 7 in Zaganiyah, Iraq while his unit was conducting operations in the Diyala River Valley.
Family members of Specialist Emolo, friends and onlookers were also in attendance to honor their son and to salute this American soldier, who was a native of Abengourou.
Paying tribute to Specialist Emolo, Major General Zabecki said: "He [Emolo] epitomized everything that is Army. His passion for his job was only challenged by his passion for playing soccer." He described the deceased as "one of the most physically fit soldiers, extremely proud to be in the army and even prouder of becoming a US citizen." Specialist Emolo, he said, "was a big brother to others, offering advice about women, spiritual guidance, and financial advice or just being a friend."
On Friday, June 29, 2007, the body will be transported to Abengourou, located in the eastern region of Côte d’Ivoire. Army Specialist Emolo will be buried on Saturday, June 30, 2007 at Abengourou’s municipal cemetery, after final funeral observances.
Ambassador Hooks, Major General Zabecki, Lieutenant Colonel Patrick O. Doyle, the Defense Attaché of the United States Embassy in Cote d'Ivoire, and diplomats from the American Embassy will be present at the funeral ceremonies to honor the life and sacrifice of this American soldier.
