Architectural Design of the New Embassy Compound

The Abidjan New Embassy Compound (NEC) was designed by CMSS Architects, Inc., an architectural firm based in the metropolitan Washington, DC area, in conjunction with HOK Architects and Engineers, Houston, TX.  The compound was constructed using design-build methods by J.A. Jones International (a Fluor company) in partnership with Sibagec, a local construction company.  Employees of the Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Building Operations were responsible for the day-to-day management and technical oversight of the project. 

The NEC occupies an 8.6 acre (3.47 hectares) site in Riviera with views of the golf course and lagoon.  It is designed in a typically American style but incorporates many elements of local heritage.  The exterior façade is inspired by a pattern of traditional African fabric, featuring dark gray and white granite.  Over 10,000 square meters of stone were used in the construction of the NEC.  The granite used on the exterior and interior of the building was sourced from Brazil and Spain, while the exterior cobblestone walkways were formed from handcut Ghanaian stone.  Inside the main entrance, warm-toned hardwoods, an intricate stone floor, and soaring ceilings further complement the statuesque presence. 

 
The NEC meets numerous critical requirements for safety, security, and functionality.  The building is environmentally-friendly and incorporates several sustainable design elements.
