Arts Exhibition Dubbed: "Reconciliation" Opens at the American Embassy
The United States Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Aubrey Hooks, expressed "optimism", as "Ivoirians throughout the country are ready to extend the hand of friendship to one another, following the signature of the Ouagadougou Agreement." Mr. Hooks, speaking at the launch of the sixth art exhibition at the American Embassy in Abidjan April 26, 2007, told the guests that, "The American Embassy supports the Ivoirian peoples in their efforts to move toward peace and reconciliation and a brighter future."
American diplomats, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and renowned artists were present at the launch of this exhibit, part of "The Ambassador’s Art in the Atrium Program." Dubbed "Reconciliation", the art show, he said, "is fitting for this historic hour," during which "Ivoirian peoples are tearing down the barriers of the last few years and reaching out to those on the other side."
The month-long exhibition is being organized in partnership with UGAN – a union of artists from northern Cote d’Ivoire. Through this exposition, the American Embassy is expressing its solidarity with all Ivoirians who are working for peace and reconciliation – all those, north, south, east, and west who are extending the hand of friendship to those outside of their regions. The program showcases a variety of artwork, including woven items, painted cloths, and sculptures.
