Engendering Bold LeadershipGeneral Background on HIV/AIDS in Cote d’Ivoire- Côte d’Ivoire has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in West Africa with an estimated stable adult population prevalence of 7.0 % (UNAIDS, 2004)
PEPFAR at a Glance- PEPFAR is a five year, fifteen billion dollar (US) initiative aimed at combating HIV/AIDS in more than 100 countries around the world
- PEPFAR has targeted additional efforts in fifteen of the worst affected countries (representing half of the world’s infections), including Cote d’Ivoire
- Over five years PEPFAR will support treatment for 2 million people living with HIV/AIDS, while preventing seven million new infections, and caring for ten million orphans and vulnerable children infected and affected by the disease
- The United States is also providing 33% of the funding for the Global Fund
PEPFAR Goals in Cote d’Ivoire- USG will work in partnership with the Ivorian government, nongovernmental organizations, faith-based communities, the private sector, and other development partners to:
- Treat 77,000 Ivorians who have been afflicted with the HIV/AIDS virus
- Prevent an additional 265,000 infections
- Offer care to 385,000 orphans and vulnerable children
- The US will spend 43.9 million (US) dollars to fight HIV/AIDS in Cote d’Ivoire this year, having spent 24.3 million (US) last year
PEPFAR Points- PEPFAR is an unprecedented response to one of the worst diseases the world has ever faced. Together, with the strong support of our Ivorian partners and the international community, we will be able to defeat this disease and to bring new hope to its many victims.
- PEPFAR aims to mobilize resources, engender bold leadership, and foster partnerships within all sectors of Ivorian society to dramatically scale up efforts to curb the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its impact on Cote d’Ivoire.
- The United States hopes that the success of PEPFAR will encourage Ivorians in all segments of society to take decisive action and join America in her deepened financial and political commitment to the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
- The United States is endeavoring to build the capacity of national partners in Cote d’Ivoire to develop, implement, and sustain innovative, cost-effective programs and services within a framework of evidence-based practice and continuous learning.
- The United States is promoting ongoing improvements in access to and quality of programs and services that are informed by client and community needs and preferences, along with international best practices.
