Book Discussion on the World Bank report entitled: “Briser la spirale des Conflits : guerre civile et politique de développement”

Mr. Prime Minister

Honorable Ministers

Honorable Guests

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Akwaba!

Welcome to the American Embassy.  I am so pleased and proud that you have accepted our invitation to join us this afternoon for what I am certain will be a sophisticated, stimulating, and satisfying discussion on the World Bank report, “Briser la spirale des Conflits : guerre civile et politique de développement .”

Could there be a more important subject today for Ivorian leaders, policy makers and opinion shapers to examine than the question of how to effectively bring to an end to civil conflict, how to rebuild a nation after years of destruction and disruption, and how to heal a society wounded by war and divided by fear?  I think not.

It is my sincere hope that today’s program – involving such a distinguished gathering of concerned citizens, government officials, media leaders, and political authorities -- will be seen as a modest, but real, contribution in that great effort.  I look forward to hearing your comments, observations, and recommendations during the course of the program, which I know will be ably led by our moderator, Monsieur Honoré K. Guié.

Once again, thank you very much for accepting our invitation to join us today.
