Embassy Gives Books to Boost Media Library
The information contained on their pages will inspire a new generation of Ivoirian journalists. These books offer the latest information on subjects ranging from media issues, to the economy, terrorism, and culture. The United States Embassy in Cote d’Ivoire has provided French translations of 85 leading American books from the Nouveaux Horizons collection, for the opening of a library at the Press House of Cote d’Ivoire. The donation of this large book collection is just the latest in a growing number of programs that the Embassy has undertaken to support the media in Cote d’Ivoire as elections approach.
Through the American NGO Internews, the United States Government is currently funding a 250 million CFA journalism training program in Cote d’Ivoire. The Embassy has also sent four Ivoirian journalists to the United States in the past two years to learn from American media professionals. Television presenter, Pascal Brou Akra, just recently returned from such a program. These initiatives come in addition to the regular seminars, video conferences, and media programs the Embassy runs for journalists throughout the year.
“We are committed to doing everything we can to support journalists and journalism in Cote d’Ivoire,” said Brett Bruen, Press Attache at the U.S. Embassy. “This book donation is but a symbolic representation of the substantial commitment the United States is making to the Ivorian press. A professional and responsible press will be a critical component for ensuring successful elections and national reconciliation takes place and we stand ready to support journalists throughout this process.”
