Conference on Development and Gender Equality
The US Embassy organized a book program, March 1, based on the ARS-Paris Nouveaux Horizons translation of the World Bank Report, “Gender and Economic Development.” Program participants – mostly women, including Ministers of State, Parliamentarians, business women, civil society activists, NGOs leaders, and Media professionals – examined conceptual and empirical links between gender, government policy, public practice, economic prosperity, and national development.
The discussion, moderated by a specialist in negotiation and conflict management, highlighted how societies which discriminate by gender tend to experience less rapid economic growth and greater general poverty than societies that treat males and females more equally.
Panelists and participants agreed that gender equality could be promoted through a three- part strategy emphasizing institutional reforms, policies for sustained economic development, and active measures to redress persistent gender disparities.
