Cote d’Ivoire’s Most Popular & Admired Soccer Player Feted By Embassy Employees
June 8 will be a day long remembered by over 150 U.S. Embassy Abidjan employees, as that was when international soccer star and national football team captain Didier Drogba stopped by for a short visit. U.S. Ambassador Aubrey Hooks warmly welcomed Drogba to the chancery’s atrium, where he was joined by over 200 American and Ivorian fans and admirers who greeted the soccer superstar with loud cheers and thunderous acclaim. The Ambassador congratulated Drogba and the other players on the country’s national team – the Elephants -- for their performance in the current Africa Cup 2008 qualifying matches, and for their high profile contribution to Cote d'Ivoire’s peace process. Joining Didier Drogba in the atrium was a 15 person delegation representing the mothers of the Elephants’ team members, as well as a veritable host of Ivorian celebrities eager to celebrate their country’s most beloved sports figure. A good fun time was had by all.
