US Embassy Hosts International Education Week
The US Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire hosted International Education Week 2006 from November 27 to December 1. Sponsored by the U.S. Departments of State and Education, the celebration is aimed at promoting educational exchanges at all levels – secondary and tertiary -- in the United States, and around the world.
As part of its week-long commemoration in Côte d’Ivoire, the embassy’s Student Advising Office organized a number of programs and initiatives, in Abidjan and Yamoussoukro. These included student counseling sessions for high school and university students, panel discussions about studying in the US led by recent Ivorian graduates of American schools, presentations on applying for student visas, and a “College Fair.” Two DVCs were arranged as well – one a conversation with Ivorian students studying at a two year college in the American state of Wyoming, the other with American University of Paris’ student leaders and their Ivorian counterparts on “What Student Unions Do In The US.” .
There are over 33,000 Africans studying in the United States this year, and some 650 of them are Ivorians – 400 of them are pursuing undergraduate degrees, and the other 250 either professional certificates or graduate degrees.
