Conference on Good Governance
On January 10, an Ivoirian returning IV spoke on his program that focused on “Good Governance.” Mr. Laurent Manlan is a magistrate and president of “Transparency Justice”, an NGO whose membership consists of people employed in Côte d’Ivoire’s judicial branch pursuing internal transparency efforts.
Addressing a distinguished audience of thirty judges, magistrates, lawyers, and law students, who gathered at the American Embassy in Abidjan, he gave a detailed presentation on what he learned in the United States. He explained how the US Constitution creates the basis for the rule of law, with particular emphasis on the bill of rights.
He also explained how specific laws, like FOIA and Sunshine Laws, protect individual citizens’ rights, then synthesized all of the information and made a case for how American ideas could be adopted and applied to improve the state of justice in Côte d’Ivoire.
