Embassy Hosts Live Debate on Women Rights in Islam

About 60 participants took part in a roundtable discussion on “Women’s Rights in Islam” organized by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy on September 16, 2009.  The audience was made up of representatives of non-governmental organizations; women’s rights activists; religious leaders; academics; students; and journalists.

Three speakers including Hadja Maconi Cisse and Dr. Aminata Koné-Kane (both former IVs) and Mr. Ibrahima Kone, a human rights activist led the discussion designed to promote tolerance, diversity and mutual understanding.

After a welcome address of Public Affairs Officer Sita Chakrawarti, the discussion focused on a variety of issues pertaining to women rights under Islamic laws and constitutional provisions in force in Cote d’Ivoire.

Despite participants’ different views on these issues, there has been a general consensus that religious leaders should learn more about problems relating to women’s rights so that they can impart this knowledge on their community.  Regarding the impact of religion on women’s rights, participants agreed that a good knowledge of Islamic laws and principles would help promote good religious practices.
