Ivoirian Journalists Participate in Workshops on Covering Elections
The US Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire, in partnership with the U.N. Information Office, organized two media workshops for journalists in Abidjan and Yamoussoukro May 7 -11.
Both workshops were led by veteran correspondent and media consultant, Ronald Wimer. The first program was held in the Ivoirian economic capital, Abidjan, May 7-9 and was attended by about 35 working political editors from public and private news organizations (print and broadcast), including the UN radio station.
The second took place May 10-11 in Yamoussoukro (Côte d’Ivoire’s political capital), and brought together about 20 local/regional correspondents from major news organizations. The seminars were organized, as Côte d’Ivoire prepares for crucial elections designed to end five years of political strife in the country.
The workshops focused on the principle and the practical in covering democratic elections. In the workshops, Ronald Wimer stressed the importance of an independent and free media in a democracy, highlighted what journalists should and should not do when covering political campaigns, and encouraged them as professionals to focus on the real issues and to stick to the facts in their reporting of the next elections.
