Ivorian Journalists Participate in PAS Abidjan English Session for Journalists

On September 3, 2009, PAS Abidjan organized its monthly English Session program for 20 Ivorian journalists and media representatives. Participants listened to and read news stories on various topics culled from the VOA’s Special English Program.

Journalists also read essays they prepared on the impact of the global economic recession on African economies. Both exercises were followed by animated discussion aimed at encouraging each participant to speak the language and to be able to interact with the English speaking world. The session was led by DPAO, Anna Maria Adamo and IS, Folli Teko. Ms. Adamo, who arrived at Post just a few days ago, used this session as a window of opportunity to introduce herself and to stress the importance of a free press in democracy.

Some of the participants, who have been attending the session for the past six months, said the sessions had helped them to greatly improve their English and their confidence with the language. Participants asked that the English Session be continued and stated that the English expertise they gained better enabled them participate in the many English programs that are regularly organized by Post.

Journalists were also informed of the resources available at Cote d’Ivoire’s three American Corners locations. Many of them expressed their intention to register at the Corners to further expand their English language opportunities.
