The Information Resources Center Reopens to the Public

About hundred people were at the Information Resources Center on September 4, 2007 to attend a ceremony marking the reopening of the library. The IRC was closed for a month-long annual inventory. The program brought together government officials, leaders from the private sector, deans of universities, scientists, lawyers, presidents of NGOs, and media professionals.New resources, which are available at the IRC, were presented to the participants. They include: the E-Service, online dissemination of the information to contacts, and Book of the Month program for 2008.

Photo-Journalists and Professional Photographers Receive Training at the US Embassy

The American Embassy organized on September 11-12, 2007 a two-day workshop for about 35 local photojournalists -- both from government and private newspapers --, and professional photographers. The workshop was conducted in partnership with REPMASCI – a Network of Ivoirian Artists and Journalists Against AIDS.... (more)

American Embassy Observes National Days of Prayer and Remembrance

The personnel of the American embassy in Abidjan stood in silence on September 11, 2007 to remember thousands of victims who died in the attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. The ceremony took place at the forecourt of the chancellery. On behalf of President Bush, DCM Cynthia H. Akuetteh said: “Our Nation remembers with gratitude the firefighters, police officers, first responders, and ordinary citizens who acted with courage and compassion to save the lives of others, and we pray for the families whose loved ones were taken from them.” ... Ivorian Leaders Discuss World Bank Report on “Breaking the Conflict Trap”

On January 25, the US Embassy organized a book discussion on the World Bank Report called: “Breaking the Conflict Trap: Civil War and Development Policy.” About one hundred participants including ministers, diplomats, religious, political and community leaders attended the program.... (more)

A Delegation of Moov Côte d’Ivoire at the American Embassy

On January 23, a delegation of Moov Côte d’Ivoire, an international mobile phone company, visited the Embassy of the United States. Led by the Managing Director of the company, Mr. Ahmed Cissé, the Moov delegation met with Ambassador Aubrey Hooks. Mr. Cissé and his staff, who were visiting the chancellery for the first time, were given a tour of the Embassy. They also watched a PowerPoint presentation of the web site of the Embassy.

Ivoirian Journalists Trained on Covering Environment

To advance and improve media coverage of environmental issues in Côte d’Ivoire, the US Embassy brought together 30 journalists from the private and state-run media for a DVC with American University of Paris journalism professor, George Kazolias.... (more)

Ivorians Celebrate the Life and Ideals of Dr Matin Luther King, Jr.

U.S. Ambassador Aubrey Hooks paid high tribute to Dr Matin Luther King, Jr. during a diplomatic reception held at his residence, January 19. About 400 Ivorian political figures, government officials, municipal authorities, civic activists, community leaders, social commentators, NGO directors, educators, lawyers and cultural icons gathered at the Residence to salute the life and accomplishments of a great American, Dr. Martin Luther king, Jr., whose values have been embraced worldwide.... Ambassador Hooks receives Senegalese-American Artist

A Senegalese-American R&B/hip hop artist paid a high-profile visit to Ambassador Aubrey Hooks on December 18. Akon, who is well known for his albums "Trouble" and "Konvicted", and top hits "Locked Up", "Lonely", and "Smack That", had just finished his performances in Cote d’Ivoire.

Beoumi Leaders of the ORIGO NGO visited the US Embassy

On July 13, 2007 members of the NGO ORIGO paid a courtesy call on the U.S. Ambassador at the American Embassy in Abidjan. Dr. Adolphe Saraka, who led the delegation, was responding the Ambassador’s invitation. Ambassador Hooks was the special guest of the population of Beoumi for their Easter feast. After this memorable "Paquinou", during which The Ambassador was named as a descendant of KOUASSI, the Ambassador graciously promised to invite his "tribesmen" to visit his office. Public Affairs staffers gave presentations on the embassy's activities, the Information Resource Center’s services, Cultural Exchange programs, the Student Counseling Service and the Ambassador’s Self-Help Fund. Farewell of Ambassador Hooks

As I leave Abidjan, I take this opportunity to say to each of you how much I have enjoyed working with you.  No other assignment has marked me as Cote d’Ivoire has, and each of you have contributed to making my stay in Abidjan so enjoyable and so memorable. I have so many friends and ties in Cote d’Ivoire that I know that I will be back many times, and that gives me comfort now as I say good-bye and farewell.

AIDS Road Show in Grand Bassam

On December 13, the American Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire organized a full day program to raise awareness on the HIV/AIDS. The program, which was co-hosted by REPMASCI – the association of performing artists against AIDS –, included a book discussion on “SIDA: Ce Que les Jeunes Doivent Savoir” that brought together both young people and leaders from NGOs working against AIDS.... Ivoirian Fulbright Scholar Wins this Year’s Elizabeth Warnock Fernea Award

Ivoirian Fulbright scholar Naminata Diabaté has won this year’s Elizabeth Warnock Fernea Award. The award was created in honor of an emeritus faculty member of the University and is given each year to a student in recognition of their exceptional work in ethnic third world women, and/or gender studies. Federation of Artists and Artisans of Cote d’Ivoire Launched

The Federation of Artists and Artisans of Cote d’Ivoire (FEDARTCI) was launched on December 2 at the American Embassy. The inauguration came after cultural envoy Ed Johnetta Miller conducted two-day workshops in October in Abidjan, Yamoussoukro and Bouake. During her workshops, she encouraged Ivorian artists and artisans to join forces to better publicize their products and establish commercial relationships with American businesses and institutions. Less than two months later, the sessions’ participants created FEDARTCI, an NGO whose goals include the promotion of Ivorian art, training for Ivorian artists, and developing commercial and professional relations with the United States ... Ivoirian HIV/AIDS Activist Meets President Bush at the White House

U.S. President George W. Bush received Mr. Cyriaque Yapo Ako, Executive Director of the Réseau Ivoirien des Organisations des Personnes Vivant avec le VIH/SIDA (RIP+), at the White House on Dec. 1 as part of a World AIDS Day observance during which the president also announced three new grants for HIV/AIDS prevention and care projects in Cote d’Ivoire.... Paris-Based American Journalist and Ivoirian Counterparts Shared Tips on AIDS Reporting

A select group of about 40 Ivorian print and electronic media journalists gathered at American Embassy November 20 to discuss with Diane Seligsohn, a Radio France International reporter, how to cover HIV/AIDS. The two-hour program was organized jointly with REPMASCI and CFMS-CI, two Ivoirian journalists associations fighting HIV/AIDS, in prelude to World AIDS Day. American Aid & Experts to Assist Those Affected by Toxic Waste

Miss Cote d’Ivoire Departs With American Embassy’s AIDS Road Show to the North

When the American Embassy’s AIDS Road Show set out again this morning two things were different: the destination and the composition of the team.  The destination was the North, where for the first time the caravan which has traversed the South of the country would now bring its message of abstinence, fidelity, and protection against AIDS to areas presently under the control of the New Forces.  The second difference was the presence of Miss Cote d’Ivoire, Alima Diomande, who is helping to open a discussion about AIDS amongst the youth of the country.  (more)

Assistant Secretary Applauds Ivoirian Women Journalists Organization

Radio Nostalgie, one of Abidjan’s most popular radio stations dedicated two weeks to presenting an in-depth view of the United States.  During hour-long interviews stretched out over two weeks, American diplomats, Ivoirian staff members of the Embassy, and Ivoirians who have studied and worked in the United States, painted a detailed portrait of the vast and complex country... Star Tonnerre visits the US Embassy

On February 6, a delegation from the television program called: “Star Tonnerre” visited the Embassy of the United States. Led by Warrant Officer John Chachin Sombo, the delegation met Ambassador Aubrey Hooks, who was delighted to welcome the participants. Ambassador Hooks used the occasion to briefly present the chancery to the visitors. The delegation was also taken through a presentation on visa applications and on how to study in the United States. Many young girls participate in the Star Tonnerre program, which is broadcast by the state-run television (RTI). According to Warrant Officer Sombo, the winner of the competition will take part in a film that will be shot in Hollywood, in the United States.

On February 7, a 12-member delegation of traditional chiefs paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Aubrey Hooks at the American Embassy in Abidjan. The chiefs, who come from the Adjame – a District of Abidjan –, were led by Chief Kouadio Adomon Jean-Baptiste. He said the delegation has come to the Embassy to present their good wishes to Ambassador Hooks.

US and UN joint mission visits Odienne

On February 23-24, 2007, The United States Embassy's Political Officer, Laura Taylor-Kale visited Odienne as part of a UN humanitarian mission to survey the humanitarian needs of communities near the Ivorian-Guinean border. The delegation met with local officials and UN agency representatives including the World Health Organization, UNICEF and UNHCR, to discuss the needs of the local communities, particularly given the political instability on the Guinea side of the border. The United States' diplomat also visited Sirana, a village of less than 1,000 inhabitants located 5 kilometers from the border.

A select group of Ivoirian journalists from both public and private media urged their colleagues not to serve as “the mouthpieces of political leaders”. The Charlie Porter Quartet, an American jazz group, arrived in Côte d’Ivoire on March 18, 2007 for a five-day tour in the country. Embassy’s Cultural Attaché Provides Fund Raising Advice to Ivorian NGO

The American Embassy’s Cultural Attaché, Linda McMullen, gave a full presentation on fundraising and grant-writing strategies to the leadership of an Ivorian NGO working to strengthen the idea of meritocracy in Côte d’Ivoire -- LAPACI (Laïcité et Paix en Cote d’Ivoire). Finding the financial means to accomplish its goals is always a challenge for an NGO, and the good work of LAPACI certainly merit everyone’s support.  A key objective for the NGO is to lessen the all-too-prevalent practice of selecting people for jobs or other benefits based on their religious, ethnic, or community membership.  As one LAPACI director noted, “Merit alone should be the qualifier and decider for hiring.”   

Annual Meeting of the PEPFAR Partners in Côte d'Ivoire

An annual meeting of PEPFAR (President's Emergency Program for AIDS Relief) partners in Côte d'Ivoire opened on March 26 at the Hotel Ivoire in Abidjan. Over 250 delegates -- including Ivoirian officials from the Ministry of Health in charge of AIDS, as well as local and international NGO representatives -- are attending the three-day conference. In his opening address, the US Ambassador to Cote d’Ivoire, Aubrey Hooks, underlined the positive results already achieved in Cote d'Ivoire as part of the PEPFAR-sponsored programs and efforts aimed at fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Traditional Dance Troupe from Korhogo Performs at the Embassy

The Boloï traditional dance assemble of Korhogo performed at the US Embassy on April 3. The cultural group, in the Ivoirian economic capital to participate in the national "N'Zassa Cultural Festival," performed at the Embassy in a program co-hosted by the Federation of Artists and Artisans in Cote d’Ivoire, and the General Council of Korhogo. The one-hour music show was marked by fabulous dance, acrobatic and instrumental displays.

Lusaka AIDS Conference Participants Share Experience with Ivorian Journalists

Two well-known and experienced Ivorian journalists, Bakayoko Zéguéla and Kadja Brasin, participated last November in an All-Africa PEPFAR Conference held in Lusaka, Zambia. The conference, intended for media personalities and newspaper editors, focused on how they could help the general public have a better understanding of HIV/AIDS issues in their countries and what they can do to encourage correct, consistent, and in-depth reporting on AIDS. It was such a stimulating and satisfying experience, the two Ivorian participants wanted to share their newly acquired knowledge and skills with others.... (more) 

Traditional Chiefs of the Moossou Community Visits the Embassy

On April 3, a delegation of traditional chiefs from Moossou Community paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Aubrey Hooks at the American Embassy in Abidjan. The delegation was then taken through presentations on the embassy's activities, the Information Resource Center and study in the United States. The delegation watched a PowerPoint presentation on the embassy's website.

US Embassy Hosts Seminar on Youth Entrepreneurship

The Embassy of the United States in Abidjan hosts a two week-long training on Youth Entrepreneurship. The training, which started on April 10, is being organized in partnership with the UNDP, is provide participants – including trainers in entrepreneurship and junior entrepreneurs – with tips and skills to set up and succeed a business. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in interactive simulations that allowed them to analyze why businesses fail, but also how they succeed.... (more)

Former US Diplomat Speaks on Economic Development and Gender Issues

A former U.S. Ambassador to the African Development Bank presented a series of outreach programs in Abidjan April 17-18 with Ivorian financial and civic leaders. In  two formal sessions with members of the banking and financial communities, Mrs. Alice Dear discussed “The Role of the Financial Sector in Economic Development of Emerging Nations” and “Banking and Finance for Emerging Nations in the 21st Century.”  Her presentations gave participants valuable information on development funding possibilities for post-crisis Cote d’Ivoire.... The US Embassy’s Cultural Affairs Officer, Linda McMullen, led an intense two day workshop for NGO leaders May 7-8 in San Pedro, Côte d’Ivoire’s third largest city.  The program was involved government and local officials, as well as NGO leaders. Workshop sessions focused on fundraising (soliciting funds from individuals, organizations, and the private sector), American-style grant writing, and the importance of volunteers to community development and nation-building.... Ivoirian Journalists Participate in Workshops on Covering Elections

The US Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire, in partnership with the U.N. Information Office, organized two media workshops for journalists in Abidjan and Yamoussoukro May 7-11.  Both workshops were led by veteran correspondent and media consultant, Ronald Wimer.  The first program was held in the Ivoirian economic capital, Abidjan, May 7-9 and was attended by about 35 working political editors from public and private news organizations (print and broadcast), including the UN radio station.... Students Use Drama to Raise Awareness on HIV/AIDS

On May 30, 2007, PAS Abidjan organized a media tour to Agboville’s secondary school where the Ministry of National Education is piloting a PEPFAR-sponsored HIV/AIDS program aimed at protecting students and teachers from HIV. The tour was to create awareness in combating and preventing this disease amongst the students. The outreach program was an excellent opportunity for the Mission to use the media to support its efforts in reducing the spate of the disease in Côte d’Ivoire.... (more)

Ivorian International Visitor Cisse Mohamed visited a school in Philadelphia and was under the spell of the kids. Mr. Cisse is in the United States of America on the U. S. Department of State IVLP program on Grassroots Democracy.

American Embassy Hosts Art Exposition entitled “Retrouvailles” 

The seventh art exhibition of the American Embassy opened on June 7. Dubbed “Retrouvailles”, the month-long exposition, which was launched by Ambassador Aubrey Hooks, was to mark “The Ambassador’s Art in the Atrium Program.” American diplomats, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and renown artists were present at the ceremony.

Cote d’Ivoire’s Most Popular & Admired Soccer Player Feted By Embassy Employees

June 8 will be a day long remembered by over 150 U.S. Embassy Abidjan employees, as that was when international soccer star and national football team captain Didier Drogba stopped by for a short visit. U.S. Ambassador Aubrey Hooks warmly welcomed Drogba to the chancery’s atrium, where he was joined by over 200 American and Ivorian fans and admirers who greeted the soccer superstar with loud cheers and thunderous acclaim.... Traditional Chiefs of the Sikensi Community Visit the Embassy

On June 28, 2007 a delegation of traditional chiefs from Sikensi paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Aubrey Hooks at the American Embassy in Abidjan. The delegation, which was led by the Mayor of Sikensi, Mr. Aboh Faustin, was then taken through presentations on the embassy's activities, the Information Resource, and the Ambassador’s Self-Help Fund. They also toured the art exhibit in the embassy’s atrium. Toni Blackman and Brandon Albright Take Hip Hop to Côte d’Ivoire

From June 25 through July 5, 2007, two renowned American Hip Hop maestros visited Côte d’Ivoire as part of a program dubbed: "Hip Hop for Reconciliation". The two musicians used this cultural tour to offer hands-on workshop programs to young Ivorians. The aim of these workshops was to allow budding musicians and hip-hop dancers to improve their musical and dance skills, interact with Americans, and learn how to write songs and perform dances that will support peace building and reach out to other youth. Toni Blackman and Brandon Albright visited Duékoué, Odienné, and Korhogo – in the western and northern regions of Côte d’Ivoire. The two-week long visit ended in Abidjan, after their extraordinary performance at the soiree hosted by Ambassador Aubrey Hooks to mark America’s Independence Day.

Cote d’Ivoire HIV/AIDS program draws support from top U.S. official

The leader of all U.S.-supported HIV/AIDS activities worldwide arrived in Abidjan Monday (July 16, 2007) to consult with top Ivorian government officials and get a firsthand look at the country’s fight against the epidemic. Ambassador Mark Dybul, who as U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator heads the $15 billion PEPFAR initiative in 100 countries, was joined by Global Fund executive director Michel Kazatchkine and U.S. Ambassador Aubrey Hooks for visits with President Laurent Gbagbo; Prime Minister Soro Guillaume; Minister of the Fight Against AIDS Christine Adjobi; Minister of Health Allah Kouadio Remy; Minister of National Education Gilbert Bleu Lainé; Minister of Family, Women, and Social Affairs Jeanne Peumond; and representatives of civil society.... An Ivoirian-American Soldier Returns Home For Final Funeral Rites

Emotions were strong at the Military Airport in Abidjan today, when the casket containing the body of Army Specialist Ebe Firmin Emolo arrived on board a United States’ military aircraft. The body of Specialist Emolo was accompanied by Major General David T. Zabecki, Representative of the U.S. Army's Chief of Staff, and an American military honor guard.... (more)

Ambassador Hooks Hosts Reception to Celebrate American Independence Day

The United States celebrated the 231st anniversary of its independence yesterday, July 4. To honor the event, American Aubrey Hooks hosted a grand reception at his residence in Abidjan. Nearly a thousand guests – including members of the diplomatic corps, members of the Ivoirian government, political leaders, representatives of religious groups, traditional chiefs, civil society activists, cultural icons, and friends of Ambassador Hooks -- were in attendance. July 4 marks the day the "Founding Fathers" of the United States declared their independence from Great Britain. In a Proclamation, President Bush said: "We remember the great courage and conviction of our Founders, and we celebrate the enduring principles of our Declaration of Independence." (Photo Album)

Ivoirian Soccer Maestro Becomes PEPFAR Ambassador Against HIV/AIDS

Ivoirian international footballer Touré Yaya Gnégnéry has been sworn in as an Ambassador in the "Sports for Life" program, a campaign tailored by the PEPFAR (the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) to fight HIV/AIDS in Côte d’Ivoire. Ivoirian-American Soldier Killed in Iraq is Buried in Hometown

US Army Specialist Ebe Firmin Emolo was laid to rest last Saturday in Abengourou, his hometown in eastern Côte d’Ivoire. Emolo, 33, was killed by a bomb detonated near his patrol on April 7, in Zaganiyah, Iraq. His unit was conducting operations in the Diyala River Valley in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On Thursday July 19, 2007, PAS Abidjan staff welcomed twenty-five contacts from Abraham Lincoln Language Institute and the Ivorian Oil Refinery Co. for an immersion session. After a PowerPoint presentation on the Embassy NEC building and the IRC services and information resources available, our guests expressed their satisfaction. Mr. Craig, the Business Communications Manager of Abraham Lincoln Language Institute, sent a congratulation mail to express the positive impact of their visit to the Embassy.

Senate staffers visit PEPFAR Cote d’Ivoire

In preparation for congressional deliberation on a second five-year phase of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), two U.S. senate staffers visited Cote d’Ivoire this month as part of a four-country fact-finding mission to Africa.Shannon Smith and Mark Clack, aides to Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joseph Biden (D-Del.) and Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-Maryland), respectively, toured PEPFAR-supported HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment sites and consulted with top Ivorian officials to gain insight into the workings, results, and challenges of the U.S.-funded initiative....
