PEPFAR's 'Promise of Partnerships'
About 300 representatives of PEPFAR partner organizations, Ivorian ministries, and international and local organizations gathered to consolidate, coordinate, and extend the fight against HIV/AIDS in Cote d’Ivoire at the PEPFAR 2006-2007 Partners Meeting March 26-28 in Abidjan.
PEPFAR (the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), the largest initiative ever launched against a disease, is a five-year, $15 billion program funded by the American people to help nations around the world provide HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment.
In an overview of PEPFAR’s work in Cote d’Ivoire, Country Coordinator Jyoti Schlesinger told the meeting audience that dramatic increases in U.S. funding – from $24 million in 2004 to more than $65 million this year – have been matched by equally impressive results, including:
More HIV testing sites (81 nationwide, up from 18 in 2004).
More treatment sites (58, up from 16) providing antiretroviral therapy to more
than 21,000 people living with HIV/AIDS.
Palliative-care services for more than 42,500 people.
- Care and support for more than 22,500 orphans and vulnerable children
