Ivorians Examine Issues Involved in the Fight to Protect the Environment
On November 9, about 40 NGO leaders, politicians, journalists, civil society leaders, and U.S. government exchange program alumni gathered in the American Embassy to discuss environmental issues.
Former International Visitors Kadiatou Ouattara, an NGO leader, and Ali Yoda, a journalist with the Ivoirian State Broadcasting Corporation, served as program panelists. They spoke on the many challenges Ivorians face in trying to protect their environment.. Program participants examined the many links between environmental issues and public health, the national and local economies civic society measures, primary and secondary education, and the role of the press.
It was the right program at the right time -- particularly topical because of the recent dumping of toxic waste in Abidjan last August, and the resultant environmental problems. It also gave engaged Ivorians the occasion to exchange with their counterparts concrete ideas and tips about inexpensive but practical steps to clean up the environment, protect it better and improve public health.
