Resumed Violence in Cote d'Ivoire

Richard Boucher, Spokesman
Washington, DC
June 8, 2004

The United States condemns the June 7 violation of the ceasefire in Cote d’Ivoire committed by rogue New Forces elements. We regret the loss of life and applaud the prompt action by the United Nations Operation in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI) and French Licorne troops to stop the individuals responsible. We note that New Forces leaders have themselves condemned this ceasefire violation.

We further condemn the violent acts committed by youth groups in Abidjan over the last 48 hours. These attacks on foreign nationals, their property and businesses, a foreign diplomatic mission, and United Nations facilities are unacceptable.

The U.S. has joined others on the Security Council who have made clear that the Council is prepared to take further steps against individuals blocking full implementation of the Linas-Marcoussis peace agreement.
