Road Washout

To the American Citizen Community:

US Citizens are advised to avoid the portion of the “Lagoon Road” connecting Cocody and Riviera between Blvd de France and the “Embassy Road” leading to the US Embassy.  A few hundred meters west (right) of the stoplight T intersection of the Lagoon and Embassy Roads, the pavement and the earth beneath the road have begun to wash out. There are stones placed on the side of the road to prevent vehicles from getting too close to the edge, which is the lane closest to the lagoon. However, the erosion beneath the road is far worse than what is visible from the surface. You should seek alternate routes to avoid the Lagoon Road except in cases of emergency. If you must use the Lagoon Road, do not drive near the right edge of the eastbound lane.

As a reminder, being proactive about security includes knowing alternate routes to your destination.  We encourage all US Citizens to be aware of alternate routings, and to avoid using the same routes on a continual basis.

The U.S. Embassy is located in the Riviera Golf neighborhood of the Cocody section of Abidjan.
