Students Use Drama to Raise Awareness on HIV/AIDS
On May 30, 2007, PAS Abidjan organized a media tour to Agboville’s secondary school where the Ministry of National Education is piloting a PEPFAR-sponsored HIV/AIDS program aimed at protecting students and teachers from HIV.
The tour was to create awareness in combating and preventing this disease amongst the students. The outreach program was an excellent opportunity for the Mission to use the media to support its efforts in reducing the spate of the disease in Côte d’Ivoire.
About 30 journalists – from national media outlets including the state-run television networks – took part in the tour. The school’s Health Club presented drama and classroom activities which highlighted abstinence as the only way for students to avoid contracting the HIV. Reporters were informed of the role of the government of the United States in the campaign against HIV/AIDS in Côte d’Ivoire through the PEPFAR.
