Ivoirians Discuss Results of US Mid-Term Elections
On November 22, a select group of about 20 returned International Visitors, US graduates, and Fulbrighters – most of them university lecturers, civil society representatives, or leading members of political parties – gathered at the US Embassy in Abidjan to discuss the results of US mid-term elections with speaker Steven Rudy Ekovich.
This program was a follow-up to one held on October 24, which discussed the elections’ anticipated results. Mr. Ekovich, an Associate Professor at the American University of Paris, felt the major issues influencing American voters were congressional corruption, terrorism and national security concerns, the American economy, and the war in Iraq. He also showed the impact of American foreign policy on the elections’ outcome.
An area of interest for the participants was the question of guarding one’s confidentiality in the voting process. The general consensus was this program gave Ivoirian civil society leaders and others a good model to consider in working toward free and fair elections
