Washington Impressed by the Rapid Development of FEDARTCI
The United States Ambassador in Côte d’Ivoire, Aubrey Hooks told members of an Ivorian artisan NGO, FEDARTCI, that: “Washington is very impressed by the rapid development of FEDARTCI -- for its general assembly, the creation of its web site and its exhibition in the hall of the American Embassy.” Ambassador Hooks, speaking February 8 at the opening of a special art exhibition in the American Embassy, also announced that an American cultural envoy who had worked with members of FEDARTCI a few months ago, Ed Johnetta Miller, will return to Cote d’Ivoire in May for further training and consultations.
Dubbed “From Slavery to Freedom,” the month-long exposition brought together Ivorian officials, members of the diplomatic corps, renowned artists, and cultural figures. The art show was organized in partnership with the Federation of Artists and Artisans of Cote d’Ivoire (FEDARTCI), an NGO whose goals include the promotion of Ivorian art, training for Ivorian artists, and developing commercial markets and professional relations with other countries.
Organized as part of “The Ambassador’s Art in the Atrium Program,” the exhibition celebrates Ivorian traditions, artistic expressions, and heritage. A variety of art works including textiles, pottery, leather products, sculptures, and paintings from renowned artists are on display. This exhibition also comes as the United States commemorates Black History Month, when Americans honor the achievements of African Americans and their contribution to the development of the United States.
By putting incorporating traditional and modern pieces and different forms of art – painting, sculpture, weaving, pottery, and even music – the exhibit showcases the diversity of Côte d’Ivoire’s artistic heritage. The Vernissage also offered performances by diverse cultural groups and artists, including gospel singer Constance and Arc Musical.
